“In 1987, I settled in Zsennye, and from that point on, my work took a major turn. I began creating works built from found natural objects. I shape the composition of the artwork using a fungal mycelium hidden in the forests of Rábamelék (Rizomorpha mycelium). From the living world around me, I seek to discover nature’s fantastic system of symbols, which speaks to the nature of existence and death.”
This Hungarian painter was a prominent figure of the second half of the 20th century, known in particular for his expressive, figurative works. He was born in Budapest and studied at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where he was strongly influenced by postwar modernism and European avant-garde movements. His art is characterized by dramatic color contrasts and intense brushwork, which he often used to depict human emotions and social tensions.
Throughout his career, Erik Scholz participated in numerous domestic and international exhibitions, and his works became sought after by many galleries and private collectors. Thanks to their vibrant color palette and strong composition, his works remain popular among collectors to this day and are frequently sought after at auctions. Even after his death, he continues to have a significant influence on Hungarian painting, and his works are regarded as important pieces in the history of 20th-century Hungarian art.
